The Design program at the School of Theatre is an intensive conservatory program with a national reputation.  The program stresses collaboration, process, and the voice of the individual artist. The School’s Boston University Theatre complex consists of Joan and Edgar Booth Theatre and 855 Commonwealth Avenue with Studios, Black Box Spaces, all of the shops and laboratories needed for creating work for—scenery, costumes, lighting, sound—as well as classrooms and offices for the School’s Design & Production program.

The Master of Fine Arts in Stage Design program at Northwestern University prepares a select group of scenery, costume, and lighting designers for professional careers in the American Theatre, international theater and related design fields. Central to this three-year program of study is an emphasis on intensive collaboration between designers and directors, rigorous analysis of texts, thorough research and a fervent effort to nurture unique artistic voices. It is our belief that passionate, insightful artists immersed in a team-based environment, will generate bold, compelling theatrical works.

 

The Department of Design for Stage and Film at NYU/Tisch School of the Arts is a diverse community of theater and film artists. Our 3 year MFA (Graduate) program educates future generations of theater and film designers who, like our faculty and alumni before them, will have a profound impact on the arts through their design work.

 

Preparing students to understand and work in the professional theater. Our training provides a strong foundation in design and technology and the skills to compete in the professional market. We feel a graduate school needs to combine good training with professional opportunities. To that end, we make a point of pursuing student job placement.

 

Offering an MFA in Scenic Design, Costume Design and Costume Production, Penn State is an intensive three-year professional training program taught by working professionals. Hallmarks of our program include highly personalized studio training, exceptional individual mentorship, strong focus on contemporary digital design methods, ambitious realized design and production opportunities, and a strong emphasis on text analysis, and story-telling.  Our versatile approach to training results in outstanding job placement spanning the entire range of live entertainment. Penn State grads are working on and off Broadway, in regional and academic theatres, film and television, and in the commercial live entertainment industry.
