The Master of Fine Arts in Stage Design program at Northwestern University prepares a select group of scenery, costume, and lighting designers for professional careers in the American Theatre, international theater and related design fields. Central to this three-year program of study is an emphasis on intensive collaboration between designers and directors, rigorous analysis of texts, thorough research and a fervent effort to nurture unique artistic voices. It is our belief that passionate, insightful artists immersed in a team-based environment, will generate bold, compelling theatrical works.


Preparing students to understand and work in the professional theater. Our training provides a strong foundation in design and technology and the skills to compete in the professional market. We feel a graduate school needs to combine good training with professional opportunities. To that end, we make a point of pursuing student job placement.

UT Live Design is a master of fine arts degree program where you can explore your talent at a university with vast academic resources in the dynamic and culturally inclusive city of Austin. We believe that training artists in design for the theatre prepares them for careers as inventors and producers of work in all aspects of live theatrical performance and the related fields of film, television, themed attractions, concerts, events and exhibits – wherever the focus is on the live presence of a human story.


Our goal is to train scenic, costume, and lighting designers in the performing arts to become professional visual artists of the highest caliber.  We hope to aid in developing artists who can invent personal, unique, and enriching solutions to the complex artistic challenges that manifest themselves in the dramatic exploration of complex human emotions, ideas, and relationships.
